Project Newsletter #3

Picture

Welcome back to the STEP2LAB newsletter!

This edition provides a deep dive into the STEP2LAB initiative's progress, offering exciting updates and insights. Our dedicated team has been hard at work, and we're eager to showcase the significant strides we've made.

OUR LATEST INITIATIVES

Empowering Inmates through Private Industry Induction Training

The STEP2LAB project has been actively engaged in training inmates for private industries' induction, with a primary focus on delivering the inaugural 'Technical Drawing' course.

The integration of Technical drawing using CAD in vocational training in prisons holds significant potential. CAD is a software tool that facilitates the design and optimisation of products, structures, or systems. With CAD, users can develop detailed 2D and 3D models, refine and perfect performance and functionality through computer simulations, and produce technical documentation for manufacturing or construction.

This training programme aims to provide participants with a foundational understanding of terminology, standards, and the basics of interpreting 2D designs.
The Portuguese partner, CENTIMFE, completed this pilot in July, revealing insightful information about challenges faced by individuals transitioning from jail to the workforce, such as stigma, lack of support networks, and poor qualifications.

The Italian partner, IRFIP, successfully conducted a pilot in October involving 18 students aged between 15 and 19 years old. Feedback from participants indicated overall satisfaction, with many expressing contentment in being introduced to Technical Drawing through the STEP2LAB course.
The remaining piloting partners will build upon initial feedback and acquired knowledge.
The project partners are launching a Training of Trainers program, in 2024, to support staff in delivering the STEP2LAB 'Technical Drawing' course using a blended learning approach.

On the 12th and 13th of October, the consortium met up in Pietramontecorvino, Italy, to delve into the latest updates on the project’s results and management.

STEP2LAB Success Stories

In addition to the ongoing initiatives, the consortium is developing a catalogue of Case Studies and Success Stories stemming from the STEP2LAB course. This compilation serves as both a promotional tool and a benchmark, to be shared with industry stakeholders, enhancing awareness among potential employers and investors. The aim is to showcase how collaborative efforts can enhance societal security and inmates’ integration.
Each consortium partner has contributed a minimum of three case studies from their respective countries. These case studies delve into the individuals' background, including life before entering prison, upbringing, education, and interactions with the criminal justice system. The narratives also explore the impact of training in prison on their lives, highlighting achievements, challenges faced during the training process, and plans.

"Today I'm the one with the most diplomas in my family. I was a failure at school and now I'm a university teacher. I was a prisoner, now I work in prison. The police used to run after me, now I run after them to give them training" – Quote from a French Case Study.
