Project Newsletter #1

Picture
Welcome to the 1st Edition, of the STEP2LAB Newsletter!
Thank you for your interest in this important initiative!
Let's get to know the project and what to expect from us in upcoming editions.

WHAT MOVE US

Building Bridges for Successful Reintegration

Reintegration into society is a crucial step to prevent recidivism. Professional skills enabling individuals to pursue a career after release are solid anchors that address one of the most important structural vulnerabilities of persons who have been deprived of their liberty.

At the same time, industries need human resources with specific competencies that can be learned and enhanced. Nonetheless, establishing this symbiotic relationship between companies and prisons can be challenging due to the sometimes intricate bureaucratic process.

Therefore, it is important to support these actors in the collaborative creation of effective social and labour reintegration roadmaps for people in prison.

STEP2LAB targets a younger audience and inmates with or at the end of their sentence, seeking to capacitate prison inmates and spark their motivation to invest in a career.

Empowering people in custody for career development

The STEP2LAB project focuses on creating a framework for, preparing and supporting individuals deprived of their liberty in the process of obtaining employment in the industrial sector. Together with industry companies, the STEP2LAB partners will define standards of cooperation between inmates and employers and introduce continuous improvement protocols.

On the topic of career development, the goal is to enhance initial and continuous learning of detained individuals.

The project seeks to pilot the resources it will develop with more than 200 inmates from the countries involved in the partnership, providing vocational guidance and a set of basic competencies in a specific industry. Additionally, this contact will include developing a career plan and testing internship programmes while serving the prison sentence.

Driving sustainable change through training and cooperation

At the end of the project, in June 2024, the consortium will have developed a replicable process for fomenting the synergic collaboration between correctional services and private industries.

The project initiatives include a "Training of trainers" course designed for prison and industry personnel, focusing on the setup and management of the processes ad models proposed by
STEP2LAB. Once implemented, this framework can be further customised and extended to benefit other institutions and countries, thereby enhancing offender reintegration outcomes.
